Join us for an afternoon of celebrating local history featuring:

  • Take the Journey book launch - Author Jim Percoco will discuss the "power of place" in teaching American history, rooting his remarks in the Latin phrase "genius loci" which refers to the spirit of a place. He'll explain how "places" hooked him into teaching and why he is such a supporter of the cultural sites of the National Park Service and how as a teacher his role is to foster stewardship of these places to/for the next generation. He will be signing copies of his book (available for purchase at the event) afterward.
  • Ashburn Colored School tours — Loudoun School for the Gifted students will be offering tours of the Ashburn Colored School located across the street. You'll see the incredible progress that has been made since the vandalism and subsequent community restoration event.
  • Live music by singer/songwriter Reggie Harris — Steeped in the tradition of African American spirituals, folk, gospel, rock and the music of civil and human rights, Reggie is recognized as one of the foremost presenters of songs, who, in the spirit of his mentors Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte and Bernice Johnson Reagon, gets people smiling and singing.
  • Live music by JustLeft who play contemporary bluegrass and American roots music.

Light hors d'oeuvres will be served.
