Our academic program is built around great books, great questions, and STEM-courses that illuminate the real world. We select only the finest content (rich texts instead of textbooks, open-ended questions instead of worksheets, and distinguished speakers discussing current, complex issues).

Our middle school program is designed to prepare students to excel in high school, academically and socially. And our high school program prepares students to excel in any college and professional program, academically and socially.

Our teachers are extraordinary.

Faculty members are intellectually curious and highly capable, and they are here because they want to help students learn deeply and be successful in, and long after, college.

All have advanced or engineering degrees (often PhDs), and are subject matter experts in the subjects they teach. Many are former professionals (e.g., lawyer, engineer, software developer) who can make memorable connections between course content and the real world. And we have a 1:4 faculty:student ratio, and a 1:3 adult:student ratio, so students have more direct time with their teachers than anywhere else.

This is the only school where every one of our students works at the right level.

We meet you where you are, independent of your age. For example, we have sixth graders working with college-level humanities content, and eighth graders beginning advanced math usually reserved only for highly selective STEM high schools.

Trips away from campus that build upon or illuminate academic work in the classroom are an important part of our academic program. We take two to four trips off-campus each month (state and national capitol buildings, theaters, museums, power plants, data centers, scientific research centers, and on and on). These trips are designed to augment our academic program in all of our courses. As a small school, we have the advantage of being able to visit places and participate in events that larger schools cannot because of their size and academic program.

We are small by design, because we want students to love being at school everyday. Not only because they love the books, classes, and intellectual discussions, but because they feel like they are part of a community and know they have something valuable to contribute.

What makes our college admissions program exceptional?

  • Personalized college counseling - Sylvia Israel, our Academic Dean, works with each student to help them find the best fit for college, and to help colleges understand our school and our students.
  • College visits and discussions - As a school, we tour colleges every year - from Harvard and Stanford to William & Mary and UVA.
  • Working relationships with faculty - We treat our students as junior colleagues. We also work with students over many years, so when teachers write college recommendation letters, it is with a deep knowledge of each student, which is critical to help colleges understand why our students are exceptional.
