5 Ways to Find your Passion

By Regan Elizabeth Mull

When you get to the time in your life where you start applying for college, it can be tough to figure out what exactly you want to do. You could like several things, or you could have no idea where to start.

Here are five tips for finding your passion, which you can possibly convert into a future career.

Tip Number 1:
Try as many things as possible early on.

When starting high school you want to try and dip your toes into as many different activities or classes as possible. This will give you a sense of what types of activities you like and what you are good at. For example, when I was in 10th grade I joined Model UN. At the time I did it because I thought it would look good for college, but I quickly realized that I not only had fun, but was also quite good at it and loved the interactions with international students and advocating for others.

Tip Number 2:

Travel

Tip Number 2

Sometimes all you need is to go to a different place, and have unique experiences to find what you’d love to do. For example, you could go hiking in Utah and stumble upon dinosaur tracks. This could cause you to realize you have a passion for paleontology. By traveling you may discover something about yourself you wouldn’t otherwise.

Tip Number 3:

Talk To Your Peers

Tip Number 3

It may sound obvious, but sometimes the people closest to you can introduce you to discover passions. Talking to friends, family, and teachers could help you learn about an interesting topic you may want to pursue. For example, you could talk to your Grandfather about his days working in engineering at NASA, which could spark your interest in aeronautics.

Tip Number 4:

Look at Your Pastimes

Tip Number 4

If you spend a lot of your time doing a hobby, it is very likely that it could turn into a passion. For example, if you spend a large amount of your free time baking, you could discover a passion for it! Sometimes a passion can be right under your nose.

Tip Number 5:

Media

Tip Number 5

Finally, you could be inspired to try something new by watching a movie or reading a novel. For example, one student says that he found a passion for theater from watching La La Land. He now is able to gear that passion towards a future career in the entertainment industry.

Overall, finding a passion is a daunting task, but hopefully these five tips help you discover something you really love. Who knows, maybe you’ll even discover a future career? Have a great day and I’ll see you next time!
