Notes from the Road: Boston, MA (October 6-7, 2022)

Hello from Beantown!  Our first two days have been jam-packed with activities, and while we had originally planned optional outings this evening, I can safely say that everyone is eager to hang out at the hotel and get some rest!

Hopefully all of the parents are on the Boston Group text chain, but just in case you aren't, I wanted to give everyone a quick update on our trip so far and share some photos of your kids (and some of their lucky teachers) living our best Boston lives!

Day 1: While we were fortunate to not hit much traffic on the trip up, we still didn't arrive in Boston until almost 7pm.  After checking into the hotel and dropping off luggage, we regrouped in the lobby and broke off into groups for dinner.  After dinner, we all converged on Toscanini's (Dr. Oliveau's most favorite!) for a sweet ice cream treat before turning in for the night.

Day 2: After breakfast around the hotel we rode the T across Cambridge to Harvard University where we enjoyed an interesting and informative historical tour from our student guide, June, as well as a more informal, anecdotal tour from Dr. Oliveau.

After lunch in Harvard Square and a trip to Newbury Comics, we took the T back across town to our next stop of the day (and Dr. Oliveau's former stomping grounds) The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  LSAS students enjoyed hearing some classic Dr. Oliveau stories, including the time he crashed his bicycle and almost died, and how he once had a job feeding data cards through a giant supercomputer on such a crazy schedule that he once had to ask a passing student whether the sun on the horizon was rising or setting as he left the building.

After all that touring, students (and faculty) were happy to get a short respite as we boarded the bus and headed northeast to Salem, where Mr. Percoco gave the history and background of the Salem Witch Trials Memorial.  The somber memorial was a stark contrast to the raucous revelry of costume-clad visitors popping in and out of quirky attractions, shops and restaurants.

After taking in the spooky sights of Salem for a couple of hours, we boarded the bus and headed back to the hotel.  After such a full day, students were eager to just relax in the hotel and hang out with friends.

Tomorrow we are looking forward to another fun (and full) day of touring as we head to the Boston Tea Party Museum, Fenway Park and the Museum of Fine Arts, but first- SLEEP!

Until tomorrow....
